Welcome to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s electronic background check process.
We’ve created this side of the website specifically to help business owners, agencies, and community groups decide which level of police screening check is most appropriate for your employees and volunteers.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service currently offers three different types of screening checks; the Police Criminal Records Check, the Police Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check, and the Police Vulnerable Sector Check. The requirements of these have been updated to reflect the changes which came into effect on November 1, 2018 with the Police Record Checks Reform Act.
We've provided ample information on this website to give you background on all three levels of checks and help you make the correct selection for your employees and volunteers.
We ask that you pay particular attention to the information on the Vulnerable Sector Check. It is the most comprehensive of all police checks and the position must meet a very narrow set of criteria in order for us to process this type of check for you.
Your employees or volunteers must be working in a position of authority or mentorship or have sustained contact in an unsupervised environment with people who are in the vulnerable sector. By definition: children; persons with disabilities, or the elderly.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service cannot provide record checks for people living outside of Canada. If you do live out of the country and need confirmation that you do not have a criminal record in Canada, you may obtain a copy of your Canadian criminal record through the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
