Applicants With A Criminal Record
The vast majority of people do not have criminal records, nor any dealings with police. Some will not have criminal records, but may have had contacts with police on matters that may or may not be relevant to the employer. Certain police contact information may prompt the employer to ask additional questions, but should not necessarily be a barrier.A reasonably small percentage of people will have convictions for criminal offences, generically known as 'a criminal record'. This could be for matters that happened many years ago, or for relatively minor offences, and may not be relevant or have any negative effect on their ability to secure a position with most organizations. We encourage employers to give balanced and responsible consideration to the existence of criminal record information, and ensure that any decision on the suitability of an applicant is fairly weighed against the relevance it might have to the position being offered
