Police Background Checks
Welcome to the Saskatoon Police Service's online process for completing a criminal record check or a vulnerable sector check for volunteer or employment purposes. This process allows you to apply for a criminal record check and/or a vulnerable sector check at your leisure without having to attend SPS Headquarters. All aspects of the process - including verification of your identification and fee payment - are done electronically. Once our staff has received information, and there are no concerns or additional requirements, they will review it, conduct appropriate checks, prepare, certify send you an email with instructions on how to securely download your police check.
Please note: You must be a resident of the City of Saskatoon in order to apply through this Police Service. Making a false statement - such as a non-resident declaring a local address at which they do not currently reside - will result in the discontinuation of application processing and the forfeiture of all monies paid.
Please note: As of April 1, 2018 we can no longer run Criminal Record Checks for Rural Route Saskatoon addresses. You must be a resident of the city of Saskatoon in order for us to process your check with a civic street address. Please attend to the agency that polices your area:
- RR: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7: Warman RCMP, Delisle RCMP, Martensville RCMP
- RR: 5, 6, 8, 9: Saskatoon RCMP
Please contact these agencies for their hours of operation.
You cannot apply on behalf of another person. Authentication questions will be based on the applicant's personal credit file, and the questions are timed to ensure a prompt response and to further enhance security and privacy.
This process is intended for persons living and working in Canada. If you are living/working outside Canada, you should obtain a Criminal Record Check from the RCMP through the submission of fingerprints. Click here for details.
If your application is being used outside of Canada, we are unable to process a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (VS).
Choosing the wrong type of record check option (i.e Volunteer, when it’s for employment or coaching) will result in the discontinuation of application processing and the forfeiture of all monies paid. You will then have to re-apply with the correct option.
NOTE: We
do not recommend that you attempt to use this system if you:
- Have lived in Canada for less than one year;
- Are under the age of 21 years;
- Have no established personal credit history - i.e. no credit cards, bank loans, mortgage, etc. - that is required in order to authenticate your ID using EIV
Please be aware of these requirements before creating an account. If you fail to authenticate your identity, simply upload two pieces of Government issued ID, one with a valid photo, to proceed with your application.
There are two levels of Criminal Record Checks. The type of position you are applying for will determine which type of check you will require. In all cases you should consult with the organization that requires you to obtain a police check to determine which one is needed.
In order to use the online solution, a $9.95 processing / authentication fee will be added to the price of each check. This covers the cost of processing the web application and authentication with a licenced consumer credit reporting agency. In the event that you do not wish to pay the convenience fee, you may come in person to the SPS Headquarters (76 25th Street East, S7K 3PN), between 8am – 4pm, Monday to Friday.. In many cases, the additional fee to process and authenticate on-line will be a reasonable offset to the time and costs associated with visiting the police facility, including frequent wait times.
Payment is handled through a secure online processor. Our website includes online authentication, which is necessary as police services will not release information unless your identity has been confirmed. Authentication is performed by our partners, Forrest Green/TransUnion who are licensed consumer credit reporting agencies. Here, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your banking and credit history, the answers to which only you will know. Your credit file is not shared with the police; it's only a process to authenticate your identity. Once your identity has been confirmed, the process will continue.
The Saskatoon Police Service recommends all Adoption applications to attend in person as they may require to submit their fingerprints to Ottawa to complete a vulnerable sector search.
The Saskatoon Police Service charges a basic fee of $45.00 for a standard criminal record check and an additional $30.00 for the vulnerable sector check. The additional $30.00 is for a cost recovery of the equipment and staffing resources required to take and process civil fingerprints. Fingerprints can be taken at SPS Headquarters. Appointments are not required.
The Criminal Records Act requires that the RCMP use a process that is different from the process used for a Vulnerable Sector check. The RCMP encourages police agencies to conduct fingerprint based criminal record checks for all applications related to adoptions to ensure they are screened for pardoned sex offences.
A police record check is current as of the date it is completed. It is your employer/prospective employer or organization's function to determine if the record check is current enough to be accepted for the position applied for. The Saskatoon Police Services Board, its officers, agents and employees, shall have no responsibility or obligation to make such a determination.
Incomplete applications (i.e. no identification provided, authentication aborted / failed / not completed or further information requested) and applications requiring in-person attendance will remain in the processing queue for no more than sixty (60) days from the time of initial application. Fees are non-refundable and incomplete applications will be considered 'abandoned', and removed from the processing queue after sixty (60) days.
The Saskatoon Police Service will release your results digitally in an email with instructions on how to securely download it.
