Types of Police Information Checks
There are two types of Police Information Checks. Police Information Check and Police Information Check with the Vulnerable Sector. (PIC/PIC-VS) The type of position you are applying for will determine which type of Police Information Check you will require. In all cases, you should consult with the agency, organization or employer that requires you to obtain a Police Information Check to determine which one you need. We stress that you make your choice carefully as we do not provide refunds or exchanges if you apply for the wrong type of Police Information Check. This may allow the West Vancouver Police Department to assess the accuracy of the applicant’s criminal record information without taking fingerprints (additional fees may apply for fingerprints) without the delay and cost that a fingerprint comparison would cause.
Police agencies across BC, including Municipal Police Departments and the RCMP follow the BC Police Information Check Guidelines to ensure that all PIC’s are processed with a consistent standard. Police Information Checks are only valid on the day they are issued since information can change from day to day. Police Information Checks are a ‘snapshot in time’ only. The Police do not determine an expiry date; this is up to the agency/employer. Some may accept a Police Information Check that is 3-6 months old while others may want a new one. Since a person can be clear of charges or criminal activity today but could be arrested and charged tomorrow, we offer no guarantees on the validity of a Police Information Check beyond the actual date on which the searches were conducted. As well, not all criminal convictions are reported to the RCMP and more recent dispositions may not be updated on their system at the time a check is conducted. In our experience, most employers will ask for a new Police Information Check if the current one is beyond 6 months and almost certainly if it’s older than one year. However, this is entirely at the discretion of the agency/employer.
