Types of Police Record Checks

There are two types of Police Record checks (PCRC and PVSC). The nature and the responsibilities of the position you are applying for will determine which type of check you will require. In all cases you should consult with the agency, organization or employer that requires you to obtain a police record check to determine which one you need.

Please note: If you are seeking a 'Local Police Records Check' as part of the Record Suspension (Pardon) application process, please click here to submit your record check request.
  1. Police Criminal Record Check( PCRC)

This check is for applications who will NOT be in a position of trust or authority relative to vulnerable persons. Applicants must be 12 years of age or older to apply for this type of check.

Databases checked for a Police Record Check:
    • Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC)
    • RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records
    • Winnipeg Police Service Records Management System
    • Police Information Portal (PIP)

  2. Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)

This check is restricted to applicants in a position of trust or authority relative to vulnerable persons. NOTE: You must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) check. If you are aged 12 to 17 by law you can only obtain a Police Criminal Record Check (PCRC).

You can only apply for a PVSC if you live in the City of Winnipeg.

When applying for a PVSC you do not need to also apply for a PCRC for the same position, as the PVSC includes both the PCRC and PVSC.

This check will include the databases mentioned above for a PCRC along with:
    • Local Police Records – Police occurrences/information
    • National Repository of Criminal Records – Pardoned sex offender records

Please click here for further information about vulnerable sector screening and possible fingerprinting requirement as individuals applying for PVSC may be requested to attend the Police Headquarters for fingerprinting.

Here are some common examples of when a PCRC or a PVSC may be required.
